Earl Hines developed what's called a 'trumpet style' of piano playing, and it's this technical innovation, more than any single recording, that's credited with helping shape the direction of modern jazz as a whole. As a physicist, I have a particular fondness for stories like this, where someone's real contribution is a structural, almost mathematical shift in how an entire discipline operates, rather than any one visible masterpiece — the kind of foundational work that gets cited by everyone afterward without always being properly credited to the person who first worked it out. My own foundational research in condensed matter physics is still cited today, decades later, in papers whose authors have likely never heard my name attached to it, so I recognize something of Hines's situation in my own. There is a particular, quiet satisfaction, and also a particular kind of invisibility, in changing how an entire field thinks rather than simply performing within its existing rules. Both, I think, deserve equal recognition, even when only one tends to receive it.
