Dorothea Bate (1878-1951)

Thirty-four years on a mill floor taught me plenty about digging things out of the ground, though nothing on the scale Dorothea Bate managed, hunting fossils across the Mediterranean as one of the first women given an actual research post inside London's Natural History Museum. What gets me is that nobody handed her that position, she basically had to prove her way into a building that wasn't built expecting her, doing fieldwork most of her male colleagues probably assumed she couldn't handle. That's a familiar shape to me — I spent years as the union guy causing 'trouble' for management just trying to get a fair shake for the men on my floor, and I know how much extra work it is to earn a seat nobody wants to give you in the first place. She kept at it long enough that the museum eventually had no choice but to recognize what she'd found. Hard, patient, physical work, done properly, tends to win out eventually. That's been true in a steel mill and apparently true in a fossil bed too.
