Diana Nyad became, at sixty-four years old, the first person ever to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, which caps off what was already a whole lifetime of endurance achievements before that final, hardest one. Sixty-four is not an age where most folks are taking on the hardest physical challenge of their entire life — sixty-eight myself, with knees and a back that let me know about it daily after thirty-four years on a mill floor, I can tell you the body starts sending you different messages by then, and most of us are wise enough to listen. Nyad apparently decided to ignore every reasonable signal telling her to quit trying and did the thing anyway, on an attempt number I understand was well past her first, second, or even third try at that same crossing. That kind of stubborn refusal to accept "too old for this" is something I respect plenty, being a stubborn man myself who still fixes lawnmowers in the garage at an age most people call it quits.
