Clarence Darrow (1857-1938)

Clarence Darrow was a renowned defense attorney celebrated for eloquent advocacy in landmark trials, someone who built a whole career specifically around defending people the rest of the room had already decided to write off. There's something almost architectural about a really good closing argument, the way it's structured, the way tension builds toward a single persuasive point, which appeals to my design brain more than I expected it to when I first read about him. My own mother arrived here as a refugee with essentially nothing, and I grew up very aware of how much a system's fairness depends on somebody actually being willing to advocate hard for the person with the least institutional power in the room. Darrow apparently built an entire reputation on doing exactly that, again and again, in cases where it would have been much easier professionally to just take the safer client. I find that kind of deliberate, repeated choice more admirable than any single dramatic courtroom moment could be on its own.
