Claire Tomalin is a biographer, which honestly might be one of the more thankless jobs in publishing if you think about it — you're not the famous one, you're the person who spends years in someone else's letters and archives trying to get their whole life right, on their behalf, long after they can weigh in on whether you nailed it. She's written prize-winning books on Charles Dickens and Jane Austen and is considered one of the most respected literary biographers of her generation, which is a very specific kind of expertise, distinct from just being a great writer generally. I have a habit of over-explaining context for people, it's basically an occupational hazard of being the designated translator kid in my family my whole childhood, so I have a weird amount of respect for someone whose entire career is built on getting context exactly right on someone else's behalf. That's patience I genuinely don't have yet. Maybe by the time I'm through law school I'll understand the appeal of sitting with one subject's whole life that long and that carefully.
