Christopher Reeve (1952-2004)

Christopher Reeve played Superman on screen, and then, after a riding accident left him paralyzed, spent the rest of his life doing something genuinely harder than any role — becoming a tireless, effective advocate for spinal cord injury research. He co-founded a foundation that's funded real advances in the field, not just awareness campaigns but actual scientific progress. I've spent a lot of hours on the road thinking about how a person's identity can survive a total change in what their body can do, and Reeve's story is one of the clearer examples I know of somebody refusing to let a single event become the entire rest of the story. He had every reason to just withdraw from public life after that accident and nobody would have blamed him. Instead he used the exact platform his old fame gave him to push hard for other people's futures, not just his own. That's not a superhero role. That's harder than one.
