Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979)

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin figured out, in her doctoral thesis no less, that stars are made mostly of hydrogen and helium, which apparently transformed the whole field of astrophysics, and I'll admit that's not the kind of thing I usually get worked up about in this column, since most of what I write brings things back to the mill somehow. But I read enough about how her original findings got doubted and downplayed for years by more established scientists before eventually being proven right, and that part I do understand — being the guy in the room who's right early and has to wait years for everybody else to catch up and admit it. I spent plenty of union meetings being that guy myself, on a much smaller scale, obviously. There's something satisfying about somebody's actual data eventually winning out over other people's assumptions about who ought to be believed. Her discovery held up because it was true, not because anybody handed it to her easily, and that's the part worth respecting.
