I do karaoke completely unashamed of myself, which means Bruno Mars gets more than his fair share of airtime in my house, especially anything from 24K Magic. What impresses me about a song like Uptown Funk is how much craft is hiding inside something that sounds effortless — you don't casually stumble into a chart-topping, genre-blending hit like that, any more than you casually stumble into a Grammy. My daughter used to roll her eyes at how many times I'd replay his songs during long drives when she was in high school, before she went off to medical school, and now I notice she quietly hums them too when she thinks no one's listening. There's something in that kind of music — bright, precise, built to make people move without thinking too hard about why — that reminds me not everything meaningful has to be heavy. After decades of hospice work, where so much of my day is genuinely serious, I've learned to be grateful for artists who are simply, skillfully, joyfully good at making people happy for three minutes at a time.
