Bruce Springsteen, known to most simply as "The Boss," has spent his career chronicling working-class American life across albums like "Born to Run," and he's equally celebrated for marathon live performances that, by all accounts, run three hours or more without any apparent loss of energy. I am not, by temperament, a great follower of popular music ā my own preferences run to classical repertoire and opera, formed young and never much revised since ā but I find the sociological function of Springsteen's work genuinely interesting to consider from the outside: an artist devoting decades of sustained, serious attention to documenting a segment of American experience that a great deal of elite cultural production simply overlooks or romanticizes carelessly. That kind of consistent, respectful attention to ordinary working lives, over a career this long, strikes me as a form of rigor not unlike careful fieldwork, even if the medium itself is entirely outside my usual expertise. Precision and seriousness of purpose are not confined to any one discipline.
