Brian Wilson (1942-2025)

Brian Wilson was the creative force behind The Beach Boys, and even though the harmonies aren't quite the Patsy Cline and old hymns I grew up on, I understand enough about music to recognize when somebody's put real, careful craftsmanship into something that sounds effortless. 'Pet Sounds' is apparently considered one of the most influential and beautifully arranged pop albums ever made, and from what I've read, that beauty came from an enormous amount of deliberate, meticulous work in the studio, not just natural talent left alone to do its thing. I had a student once, years back, with a gift for music that took real discipline to actually turn into something, and Wilson's story reminds me a little of him — the kind of talent that only becomes something lasting once a person puts in the unglamorous hours behind it. Good music, like good teaching, usually looks easier from the outside than it actually was to build. Wilson built something that's still being listened to, generations later.
