Bianca Andreescu won the U.S. Open as a teenager in 2019, the first Canadian ever to take home a Grand Slam singles title, which is the kind of thing that would've made the front page of our little county paper for a solid month if she'd been from around here. I don't know tennis from tiddlywinks, truth be told, but I know what it takes for a young person to walk into a big arena and not fold under all those eyes. I had third graders who couldn't read a spelling test out loud without shaking, so I have a soft spot for anybody who can perform under that kind of pressure at any age, let alone as a teenager on the world's stage. My advice for young folks with a gift is always the same, whether it's tennis or times tables: practice till it's boring, then go be brave anyway. Sounds like Andreescu did exactly that, and the trophy proves it.
