Beverly Johnson was the first Black woman ever to grace the cover of American Vogue, and I want you to sit with that for a second the way I had to when I first read it — an entire industry, and it took until her for that door to open. I taught third grade for thirty-eight years in a little rural school, and if there's one thing that stays with you doing that kind of work, it's how much it matters who a child gets to see and believe they could become. Miss Johnson opening that door meant some little girl somewhere got to look at a magazine and see herself in it for the first time, which is worth more than any fashion spread. I've got a granddaughter who's mentioned Miss Johnson's name to me before, more clued in on these things than her grandmother. First is a hard, lonely word to carry, and I admire anybody who carried it well enough that the door stayed open behind them.
