👶 Naming for:

Bertha Benz (1849-1944)

Filed under the name Bertha · February 4, 2026

Bertha Benz basically drove off in 1888 to prove her husband's invention actually worked, without permission, essentially inventing the first road trip and single-handedly saving the automobile's reputation while everyone else was skeptical it would ever be practical. That is such a specific kind of main-character energy — nobody believed the product, so she just went and became the proof of concept herself, on unpaved roads, in a dress, in the 1800s. I use AI tools constantly for school and content stuff and I'm mostly optimistic about new technology in general, but I always think about the people who had to do the actual, physically risky work of proving something new could be trusted before everyone else was allowed to be casually impressed by it later. Bertha Benz did that literally, on wheels, over actual mountains, with zero roadside assistance obviously. History mostly remembers her husband's name on the car, but she's the one who put the whole invention's credibility on the line first.
