Barry Manilow (b. 1943)

Barry Manilow wrote 'Mandy' and 'Copacabana' and ended up one of the best-selling music artists in history, and here's the underdog part of the story that a lot of folks skip past: songs like that don't become that beloved overnight, they get built on years of a guy grinding out a career, show after show, before the hits actually landed and stuck. That's the exact arc I try to get my players to believe in — most legendary careers, in any field, are actually a long string of quiet reps that nobody's watching, before the one moment everybody remembers. I'm hip-hop and 90s stuff mostly, not exactly Manilow's lane, but I respect longevity and volume like that, being 'best-selling' isn't a lucky single, it's a whole career's worth of people choosing to keep listening. Give me a guy who put in the reps for decades over a guy with one viral hit any day of the week. That's coaching philosophy set to music, basically.
