Andrea Mitchell (b. 1946)

I've logged a lot of hours listening to the news out of a truck cab somewhere between two towns whose names I'll forget by next week, and Andrea Mitchell's voice has been part of that soundtrack for longer than I've had a CDL. Decades as NBC's chief foreign affairs correspondent is the kind of career that doesn't happen in one dramatic moment, it happens one story at a time, night after night, for longer than most careers last at all. I've got some complicated feelings about how the news gets covered these days, same as I've got complicated feelings about a lot of things, but I can say plainly that respected and decades-long don't usually go together in that business unless somebody's actually good at the job underneath all the noise. There's a kind of trust that builds up slow, the same way regular customers on a route start to trust a driver they see every week. You don't get decades of that by accident. You get it by being reliable enough, long enough, that people stop questioning whether you'll show up.
