Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980)

Alfred Hitchcock earning the nickname "Master of Suspense" isn't really about any one film so much as about a whole set of techniques he pioneered that plenty of directors are still using without necessarily crediting where they came from, which I find true of a lot of foundational figures in any field — the influence outlasts the specific credit. I've got a lot of hours on the road to think about pacing and tension, mostly from audiobooks and true crime podcasts that either handle it well or completely botch it, and Hitchcock apparently figured out the mechanics of that kind of dread decades before podcasting existed as a format at all. Being called pioneering means he was doing something nobody else had quite worked out yet, which takes a specific kind of nerve, betting on a technique before the audience knows they want it. I try to hold two things about influential figures like this at once — real respect for the innovation, and honest acknowledgment that I've genuinely seen very little of his actual filmography myself.
