Alan Rickman (1946-2016)

Alan Rickman is, for an enormous number of people under a certain age, permanently fixed as Severus Snape, which is a strange kind of fame because it flattens a genuinely serious, decades-long stage and film career into one supporting role in a franchise for children, however well he played it. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and built real credibility on stage long before Harry Potter, and I find that the more instructive part of his story, honestly — the long, less photographed apprenticeship that has to happen before the highly visible thing does. My own field works the same way; nobody sees the fifteen years of unglamorous experiments before the one result that gets cited for a century. Rickman's voice alone did enormous work in that franchise, but it was a trained instrument, not an accident, sharpened over a career most casual fans never bother to look up. I'd rather people knew the whole arc than just the part that made him famous to children, myself included, at some point.
