Aidan of Lindisfarne (d. 651)

Aidan of Lindisfarne was an Irish monk who ended up founding a priory on a little tidal island off the English coast, and from that one small, isolated place, Christianity took root and spread through a good part of early medieval England. I started keeping bees this past winter, two hives my neighbor gave me, and there's something about watching a whole thriving colony grow out of one small wooden box that keeps making me think of stories like Aidan's — how something enormous and lasting can start from one modest, patient effort in one small place nobody was watching very closely at the time. Lindisfarne isn't a big island. It isn't even always reachable, depending on the tide. But what got planted there rippled out across a whole region and outlasted every person who was there to see it begin. I tell my grandkids that all the time now, mostly because of these bees if I'm honest: you don't need a big stage to start something that matters. You just need to actually start it, and let it do its quiet work.
