A pole vaulter who won Olympic gold before then goes and invents the Erector Set is such a wild career pivot that I had to read it twice — like, imagine peaking athletically and then deciding your actual legacy is going to be a toy that gets kids into engineering for generations. That's such a specific kind of confidence, believing your second act could matter more than your first, gold medal and all. I think about pivots a lot given how my own resume is basically a patchwork of whatever job didn't fall through that month, though obviously my pivots are less 'invent a beloved children's toy' and more 'the mall cut my hours again.' Still, there's something genuinely inspiring about someone refusing to be defined by the thing they were already famous for. A.C. Gilbert apparently decided that getting other kids excited about how things work was worth more to him long-term than resting on an Olympic medal, and generations of future engineers are somehow downstream of that decision. Wild legacy, honestly.
